Starting a blog costs money, but there are plenty of free tools that can help you create, manage, and grow your blog without spending a penny. This guide covers the best free blogging tools I’ve personally tested, from writing and editing to SEO and design.
Free Blogging Platforms
Before you pay for hosting, there are free platforms to get started on, though they have limitations:
- WordPress.com (Free tier) – YourName.wordpress.com, 3GB storage, limited themes, no custom plugins. Good for testing but not for serious blogging.
- Medium – Publish instantly to a built-in audience. No design control, can’t monetise directly, and you don’t own your content fully.
- Substack – Great for newsletter-style blogging. Free, includes email sending, but limited for traditional blogging.
For a proper blog, you’ll eventually want self-hosted WordPress.org, but free platforms are fine to start practising.
Free Writing & Editing Tools
- Google Docs – Completely free, auto-saves to cloud, shareable with editors. Best for drafting blog posts before publishing.
- Hemingway Editor (Web) – Free online tool that highlights complex sentences, passive voice, and readability issues. Paste your draft and it tells you where to simplify.
- Grammarly (Free) – Browser extension that checks spelling, grammar, and tone in real-time. Essential for catching typos before you publish.
- LibreOffice – Free open-source alternative to Microsoft Word. Useful if you prefer offline writing.
Free SEO Tools for Bloggers
- Rank Math SEO – Free WordPress plugin that handles all on-page SEO. Installed on this site and recommended for any WordPress blog. It checks readability, keyword usage, meta descriptions, and schema markup.
- Google Search Console – Free tool from Google that shows which keywords are sending you traffic. Essential for any serious blogger.
- Ubersuggest (Free tier) – Limited but useful for keyword research. Shows search volume, competition, and content ideas.
- AnswerThePublic – Free tool that shows what questions people are asking about any topic. Great for blog post ideas.
- Google Trends – See what topics are trending in your niche. Free and invaluable.

Tools You Don’t Need to Pay For (Yet)
Many paid tools have excellent free alternatives. Don’t feel pressured to buy expensive tools when you’re just starting out. The free tools listed here can take you from zero to your first 1,000 visitors without spending anything on software.
When you do start earning from your blog, consider upgrading to paid tools like premium WordPress plugins for better performance and features.
